Natural Grocery Fundraiser to Benefit Alameda Music Project
Sun Staff Reports
Music education accessible to all children regardless of their economic circumstances is hard to come by these days. But one organization in Alameda is working to change that. Alameda Music Project is an orchestral-based after school music education program serving the social, emotional, cultural and academic needs of children in Alameda.
The Alameda Music Project provides high quality music instruction, a nutritious snack and homework assistance four days a week for the entire school year — all at no cost to families. Now in its second year, it is currently serving the needs of over 100 students and families at Maya Lin School and has plans to expand into other Alameda schools.
“Our goal is to include as many of Alameda’s underserved children as it can, whenever possible, for as long as possible, whatever their background or abilities,” founder and Executive Director Lorrie Murray said.
To help cover the costs of this ambitious initiative, the project is partnering with Alameda Natural Grocery on a fundraiser that kicks off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Alameda Marketplace.
The fundraising kickoff will include performances by the project’s junior and senior choir ensembles, at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the unveiling of beginner violin students’ cardboard violins. In addition to the performances and unveiling, CDs of video game music performed by a string quartet to benefit the project and bike-powered smoothies will be available for sale.
Following the kickoff, Alameda Natural Grocery will hold a “Round up at the Register” campaign beginning Saturday, November 21 and running until November 27th. During that week shoppers can round up their grocery bill to the nearest dollar to benefit the project. Proceeds from the campaign will go toward the purchase of much-needed instruments and accessories.
In addition to hosting the fundraiser, Alameda Natural Grocery donated the cardboard for the beginner violin project and will keep them display through the holidays. “We are very grateful to be one of the many organizations supported by Alameda Natural Grocery. They were excited to learn about what we are doing for children in Alameda and jumped right in to help,” Murray said.
The event is free to attend. Alameda Natural Grocery is located at 1650 Park Street and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
