There’s a nationwide movement afoot to spread wildflowers everywhere, and we think it’s awesome. That’s why we are inviting you to take part of it.
Over the past decade, bee populations around the world have been suffering and they need our help. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the name for the sudden and scary disappearance of bees, is a serious issue. According to The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, 71 out of the top 100 human food crops, which supply about 90% of the world’s nutrition, are pollinated by bees. That’s a lot of food we rely on them for.
While CCD causes are not commonly known, there are several factors that have been linked to their demise. Among them are large monoculture farming, the increased use of pesticides and insecticides, and the disappearance of natural habitats due to agriculture and urbanization.
The good news is we can make real and positive change.
This Saturday, April 25th, we are celebrating Earth Day at Alameda Natural Grocery by focusing on wildflowers. We want to restore a rich, varied and much-needed source of forage for the bees.
Bees do a ton of work for us, and we need to respect that. One super simple, fun and beautiful way to do that is to grow wildflowers. Bees use up a lot of energy. By providing them wildflowers, we are giving them something every living thing needs – sustenance.
A bee can travel up to 4 miles foraging, pollinating and looking for food and making honey. In addition, some types of bees will produce multiple generations each year and need food resources (pollen and nectar) to sustain strong colonies.
Imagine your yards and gardens and little pockets around Alameda filled with wildflowers, buzzing bees, happy hummingbirds and beautiful butterflies fluttering about. All while supporting the honey bee.
That’s what we’re aiming for, and we need your help.
This year, we have partnered up with Seedles to help Grow a Rainbow across Alameda. On Saturday, April 25, 2015 you can get a package of 9 colorful wildflower Seedles seed bombs for just $3 a bag (Reg, $9) if you take the pledge with us.
Seedles seed bombs are a colorful and easy way to add more beauty and forage to our landscapes. They are about as set it and forget as can be. Just stick them in the dirt, throw them someplace open, or drop them in a sad lonely little patch of dirt and let nature do her thing.
